As much as I prefer not to write about myself here, I’m going to do it again because I know it will put more pressure on me to actually do what I’m planning to do.
I studied the Japanese language in college for two semesters and I think I’ve gotten good at the basics. My biggest obstacle to improving since then is that I can read and understand only a few kanji (the complicated characters borrowed from Chinese that represent whole ideas). Within the next year, I’m going to try to learn enough of them that I can actually read and write Japanese beyond parts of video game options menus.
Supposedly, a really disciplined person can learn all 2,042 kanji considered necessary to read a Japanese newspaper in 3 months. I’m not sure I’m that disciplined at all, so I’m going to aim for that number by the end of the year.
Also, I’ve decided that I think too much, so I’m trying to learn to meditate, which I’m really bad at now. This is not a very clearly defined goal, but we’ll see.
That poetry book I’ve mentioned before is in its finishing stages, so I’m not counting it as a 2014 thing.
